Robert (Bob) Burns 08.14.1942 - 07.07.2017
On July 7th retired DMP Staff Sergeant Robert (Bob) Burns and his wife Franca were traveling by motorcycle near their summer home at Green Lake, B.C. when they were struck from behind by truck driven by a distracted driver. RCMP responded to the collision and Bob was airlifted to Kamloops Hospital. Initially it did not appear that Bob’s injuries were life threatening but a pre-existing condition added to the complexity of his injuries and sadly Bob died en-route to hospital. Franca suffered multiple serious injuries, was also air lifted to Kamloops and later spent several weeks in Delta Hospital. She is recovering at home with assistance from son Robert, daughter Michelle, her loving grandchildren, other family members, friends and hiking buddies.

Bob had both military and police careers. He served with the Queen’s Own Rifles (regular force) from 1959 to 1966 and was stationed in West Germany with NATO Forces from 1960 to 1962. He then joined the Calgary Police Service and was there from 1966 to 1970. Bob joined the Delta Police Department in 1970 and retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1999.

Bob was also a founding member of the Delta Police Pipe Band and played tenor drum for six years. He was on parade for the Band’s first official function, the funeral of Staff Sergeant Ron McKay who was shot to death while on duty in November 1974. After receiving Drum Major’s training, Bob was appointed as the first Drum Major of the D.P.P.B. in 1985 and held that position for 17 years. Always noted for his immaculate dress, deportment and military bearing Bob proudly served as D/M for the Edinburgh Tattoo, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo and many other performances until his retirement in 2002.

The Delta Police Pipe Band will perform at Bob's Celebration of Life at approx 10:20 AM Saturday Sept 23rd followed by a video presentation, a brief memorial service and lunch at the facility.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider making a donation to one or both of these charities which Bob supported:
